and Shearwater to collaborate

Petrobras has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Norwegian company Shearwater to undertake and implement scientific research and technological innovation for seismic processing and acquisition.

The goal is to improve the quality and efficiency of the data acquired. Seismic data are essential to map oil deposits.

The agreement, valid for five years, supports the efforts between Petrobras and Shearwater to develop innovative technologies that will improve information on marine subsoil and increase the value of such data while reducing the time and costs of seismic acquisition projects.

“This co-operation seeks to bolster our ongoing engagement in geophysical R&D and innovation, thereby accelerating the exploration and development of energy resources. By leveraging advanced technologies together, we aim to significantly enhance geophysical technologies and achieve superior operational efficiency, ultimately driving innovation and sustainability within the industry,” said Roberta Mendes, general manager of R&D&I at Petrobras.

“This cooperation reinforces our constant involvement in geophysical innovation, thus accelerating the exploitation and development of energy resources. By leveraging advanced technologies together, we intend to significantly improve geophysical technologies and achieve better operational efficiency, ultimately stimulating innovation,” said Roberta Alvesk, R&D/I general manager in Exploitation and Production for the Petrobras Research Center (Cenpes).

“We are excited to broaden our collaboration with Petrobras, a company that shares our commitment to seismic research and innovation,” said Irene Basili, CEO of Shearwater.

“Shearwater is a company driven by curiosity and the desire to answer questions, explore, and to accelerate the responsible use of resources. Petrobras and Shearwater share a strong commitment to jointly solving big challenges and through that creating long-term value for both companies and society at large,” added Basili.

Petrobras is recognized and awarded worldwide for developing innovative, sector-oriented technologies. The estimated investment in research, development, and innovation for 2024-2028 is USD$3.6 billion, the highest in the company’s history.

Petrobras explores, produces, and sells oil and gas in Brazil and internationally. The company operates through three segments: exploration and production; refining, transportation and marketing; and gas and power. The exploration and production segment explores, develops, and produces crude oil, natural gas liquids, and natural gas primarily for supplies to the domestic refineries. The refining, transportation and marketing segment engages in the refining, logistics, transport, acquisition, and exports of crude oil; and production of fertilizers, as well as holding interests in petrochemical companies. The gas and power segment is involved in the logistic and trading of natural gas and electricity; transportation and trading of LNG; generation of electricity through thermoelectric power plants; renewable energy businesses; low carbon services; and natural gas processing business, as well as production of biodiesel and its co-products. The company also engages in prospecting, drilling, refining, processing, trading, and transporting crude oil from producing onshore and offshore oil fields, and shale or other rocks, as well as oil products, natural gas, and other liquid hydrocarbons. In addition, it engages in research, development, production, transport, distribution, and trading of energy.

Shearwater is a global marine geoscience and technology business that specialises in collecting data offshore. The organization uses state-of-the art seismic vessels and equipment to explore the seabed and processes the data using market-leading proprietary software. These insights help clients understand the earth and make informed decisions about accelerating responsible use of its resources. Shearwater’s headquarter is in Bergen, Norway, with more facilities all around the globe. The company employs around 1,200 people.
