The most productive natural gas wells in the country are in Pennsylvania’s Marcellus Shale, said Patrick McDonnell, acting secretary of the state Department of Environmental Protection. According to the Washington Observer-Reporter, McDonnell said drillers are are more efficient and DEP is doing a better job inspecting well sites.

DEP’s recently released 2015 Oil and Gas Annual Report showed drillers in the commonwealth produced a record amount of natural gas last year and that Washington and Greene counties had 686 drilling permits, the most in the state.
