Alberta Energy Regulator Starts Investigation in Trilogy Oil Pipeline Leak

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) has issued a formal notice of investigation to Trilogy Energy following a leakage of a company’s crude oil pipeline in central Alberta.
On 7 October, Trilogy said that it had discovered a leak in one of its pipelines within its Kaybob Montney Oil Development, nearly 15km from the Town of Fox Creek. It isolated the pipeline after identifying the location of the leakage.
The company estimates the release of around 1,600 barrels of mixed oil and water from the pipeline.
The regulator agency said that the investigation will confirm the volume of the leakage and consider potential enforcement actions against the company.
“The results of the investigation will be available upon completion,” said AER.
The agency’s staff will remain onsite and continue to work with Trilogy to make sure that all safety and environmental requirements are being met.
On 13 October, the AER issued an an environmental protection and pipeline order to Trilogy to suspend operations and contain the spill.
The Calgary-based oil and gas producer was also asked to prevent migration of hydrocarbons to areas outside of the spill site, protect wildlife and the environment, and immediately control access to the affected area.
“Trilogy continues to investigate the extent of the impact of the leak as it develops remediation program. We are working closely with the AER and will continue to do so throughout our response.” it said earlier.
