SME Peru Student Chapter Wins 2015 Membership Challenge

The Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Inc. (SME) Student Chapter Fall Membership Challenge is an annual membership contest between SME student chapters to recruit newcomers to join the chapter and become SME members. The SME Student Chapter of the Universidad Nacional del Altiplano in Puno, Peru, is the winner of the 2015 SME Student Chapter Fall Membership Challenge. Winners receive a monetary award and are recognized at the SME Annual Conference & Expo.

“Through their SME membership, a student’s opportunities to be involved with industry professionals and the potential for training and skills development are unsurpassed. SME is committed to strengthening the professional workforce by providing educational opportunities for the industry’s future leaders,” said SME Executive Director David L. Kanagy.

Cash prizes for the schools with the highest percentage of growth in membership went to:
• 1st Place - Universidad Nacional del Altiplano, Puno, Peru
• 2nd Place - Indian School of Mines, Jharkhand, India
• 3rd Place - South Dakota School of Mines, Rapid City, South Dakota
• Grand Prize - Virginia Polytech, Blacksburg, Virginia

Schools that recruited 25 or more new students during the challenge were:
• Virginia Polytech
• South Dakota School of Mines
• Missouri University of Science & Technology, Rolla, Missouri

As the largest professional society in the mining industry, SME supports the world’s young leaders through professional development programs offered for its student chapters. Mentors, teaching aids, networking and resource materials are available for SME student chapter programs.

There are currently 50 active SME Student Chapters at accredited colleges and universities. The number of SME’s International Student Chapters increased from 12 in 2013 to 29 in 2016. The increase illustrates the benefits of becoming a member of SME are being recognized by future industry leaders the world over. The SME Student Chapter Membership Challenge of 2016 has opened and will run July 1 to October 1, 2016.
