Two miners escaped serious injury in a mudslide Monday, at Cadman’s High Rock site south of Monroe.

The men were working at 2:30 p.m., in the base of the quarry in the 19600 block of Highway 203, when part of their excavator got stuck, Snohomish County Fire District 7 battalion Chief Ryan Lundquist said.

They were trying to free the heavy machinery when hundreds of cubic yards of mud broke free from a lip of the pit.

The land didn’t come down incredibly fast, but it was fast enough that the workers couldn’t escape being covered up to their waists by mud and rock, Lundquist said. Other workers rushed in to dig out the men with shovels. The pair suffered no obvious injuries, but were taken to a local hospital as a precaution.

Initially, firefighters had called for a three-alarm response. They were told the victims were minors. They were, in fact, miners.
