Founder and CEO of international longwall equipment supplier, Longwall Associates, Inc. Tony Campbell died at his home in Virginia on March 5, 2021 at the age of 80.

Tony began his career in the coal industry working for American Longwall as a quality control manager in the 1980’s. While at American Longwall, Tony started his own fabricating facility in 1989, C&A Fabricating, Inc. at the age of 49 in a small garage. As C&A Fabricating began to generate profitability the company continued to upgrade their facilities and eventually moved to the current facility in Chilhowie Virginia. 

With the success of his fabricating company Tony gained interest in expanding the product line. The first of several additional business launched was C&A Cutter Head, Inc. which supplies shearer cutting drums for many of the mines in the USA.  In 1996, Tony formed Longwall Associates, Inc., which has evolved into an industry leader in longwall mining equipment in the USA. In 1999 Longwall Associates, Inc. supplied their first international customer in Australia. To better serve the Australian market, Tony formed Longwall Associates Australia in 2000 and built a manufacturing facility in Queensland. Although the Longwall Associates Australia moved all their operations back to the US headquarters, the company still supplies OEM equipment to the longwall industry in Australia. Additionally, Longwall Associates, Inc. has achieved international success in China and Mexico, providing OEM equipment to longwall mines in those markets.  After success in the longwall market, Tony gained interest in the highwall mining sector, founding American Highwall Systems, Inc. which is the only remaining U.S. manufacturer of highwall mining systems and American Highwall Mining, LLC a mining operation focused on producing blue gem coal.

All of Tony’s companies are engaged in the manufacture of mineral extraction equipment or mineral extraction operations. 

In recent years, Tony stepped away from the helm of Longwall Associates, Inc. leaving his children to operate the company, although never officially retiring. Tony focused on his highwall businesses and remained committed to their success to the very end of his life. 

Over his 80 years Tony touched many lives in the mining industry and manufacturing industry. Tony was a respected successful businessman. The legacy of entrepreneurship lives on in his companies and his families, both work and personal.
