The Illinois Coal Association has announced that Nick Williams has been chosen to succeed Phil Gonet as president, according to a news release from the organization.

Williams will start Dec. 1 and assume the duties of president Jan. 1. Williams is currently the associate director of the Illinois Petroleum Council and has previously served several legislative roles in Illinois. Williams has a degree in political science from SIU Carbondale.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to represent the industry and the thousands of workers who have dedicated their lives to supplying people with reliable and affordable energy,” Williams said in the release.

Gonet has served as president since 2004 and will remain at the association through 2020 to help with the transition.

“Phil has served the ICA with the highest level of professionalism and leadership for the past 16 years,” Chairman Steve Hicks said in the release. “He has been responsible for sustaining and growing coal’s position as a major industry in Illinois and is well-respected by both sides of the political aisle.”
