Fatality at QCoal’s Byerwen Coal Mine in Queensland, Australia
A worker is dead after an incident reportedly involving a crane at the Byerwen coal mine site near the central Queensland city of Mackay.
Emergency services were called about 7.30am to a worksite on Wollombi Road in Suttor, after the 48-year-old man was located unresponsive, a Queensland police spokesperson said. He was later declared deceased.
Reports indicate the incident involved a pick and carry crane, Resources Safety and Health Queensland CEO, Rob Djukic, said in a statement.
The cause of the incident is not yet known, Djukic said. The death is non-suspicious, the Queensland police spokesperson said.
An RSHQ coal inspector and an investigator from the Serious Incident Investigation Unit were attending the scene.
“Our thoughts are with the worker’s family, friends and colleagues today,” Djukic said.
“We are committing to a thorough investigation but as that is now under way, we will be limited in what we can say going forward,” Djukic added.
Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
Police are assisting Resources Safety and Health Queensland Mines with their investigations.
