Drummond to Partially Restart Colombian Coal Operations

Coal miner Drummond Co. Inc. will partially restart operations in Colombia on April 10 after ramping down March 24 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The company said April 8 that the move comes after the government issued a decree March 22 declaring mining an essential activity. Drummond owns the El Descanso and Mina Pribbenow open pit coal mines in the Cesar department through an 80 percent stake in Drummond International LLC, a joint venture of the company and a subsidiary of Japan’s Itochu Corp.
Drummond ships over 25 million tons of coal from Colombia, according to the company’s website.
Drummond said the team restarting the operation includes two shifts of about 400 workers, with safety protocols in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus. The company’s rail and port operations continue to operate.
