Commercial Farmers Plant First Crops with Great Quest’s Phosphate Fertilizer, Mali
Great Quest Fertilizer Ltd. has successfully launched on-farm trials of the company’s direct application phosphate fertilizer. This season will mark the third comprehensive study of the yield impact of the fertilizer. However, this will be the first scientific study conducted on commercial farms, administered by commercial farmers and analyzed by Dr. Lamine Traore and his team from the Institute of Rural Economics (IER), a division of the Ministry of Agriculture. Previous trials were conducted by the technicians of the IER on research stations located in different agro-ecological zones of Mali.
A total of 130 trials, using two tons of fertilizer products produced from the company’s own installation in Bamako, will be carried out over six different agricultural regions, as follows: Kayes - 18, Koulikoro - 38, Segou - 22, Sikasso - 25, Mopti - 12, Tombouctou - 10 and Gao - 5. The IER will monitor these trials and an interim report is expected towards the end of the year, whild a full report will be published at the end of the first quarter next year.
In preparation for the launch of these trials the company held information meetings across the country of Mali with the agricultural partners including NGO’s and fertilizer distributors, discussing the project, the company’s objectives and a presentation of the results of the previous year’s trials.
“The positive feedback received from the attendees of our public presentations was overwhelming. The successes of the previous IER trials have become well known. Commercial farmers are eager to use the product for on-farm trials, but anxious to have it commercially available and switch from imported products,” said Jed Richardson, president, chief executive officer and director.
