More than 300 acres of land near Wickenburg have been approved for a gold mine project by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.

Earlier this month, the federal agency released its decision to allow Rattler Resources to surface mine for gold-bearing gravels on about 95 public areas within the project zone in the Rogers Wash area.

“Mining activity will entail excavation of pits and trenches up to 50 feet below the current ground surface, in benches or lifts 3-10 feet high. Excavated material will be trucked to a wet wash plant in the processing area, in which gravity and related physical processes will concentrate gold and other dense minerals,” BLM records state.

The agency said the project could last up to 10 years. The mining project is expected to be carried out in two phases.

The Rogers Wash is located east of the U.S. 60 and north of the San Domingo Wash in Maricopa County.

The agency’s record of decision lists out several mitigation measures that will be taken for any potential environmental impacts to groundwater, wildlife, cultural resources, air quality, soil, and vegetation.

BLM documents show the agency concluded that any impacts to Rogers Wash and water resources “would be temporary” and “would be minimized” through protection measures.

“All mitigation and stipulations listed within the (environmental assessment) and the mine plan of operation will be complied with by the proponent as a condition of the approval. All federal, state, Tribal ,or local permitting requirements will be required to be obtained by the proponent before any mining operation is authorized by the BLM, HFO to begin,” the BLM decision states.
