Cloud Peak Energy’s Cordero Rojo Mine, located near Gillette, Wyoming, was recognized recently for its outstanding safety performance in 2016, receiving two statewide awards. Cordero Rojo Mine, one of the largest U.S. coal mines by production, successfully shipped 18.3 million tons in 2016 without incurring a reportable injury at any point during the year.

The Cordero Rojo Mine was awarded the 2016 Safe Sam Award, which is presented by the Wyoming Mining Association to the mining operation with the best safety record and the most work-hours across operations of all sizes.

The Cordero Rojo Mine also received the Wyoming Governor’s Safety Award for the large mine category. This award recognizes safety excellence among Wyoming’s mine operators, chosen from approximately 350 active operators in the state. The awards were presented at the Wyoming Mining Association’s Annual Safety and Reclamation Banquet on June 16, 2017, and the Wyoming Safety and Workforce Summit on June 21, 2017.

“One of Cloud Peak Energy’s core values is ensuring the safety of everyone involved in our business. I want to thank everyone at Cordero Rojo Mine for their continued commitment to safety, and congratulate them on this well-deserved award,” said Colin Marshall, Cloud Peak Energy’s president and CEO.

“I am proud of our Cordero Rojo Mine employees and contractors. Together we have maintained a safety focus, which has allowed us to receive awards like these. We will continue to focus on obtaining zero injuries, while performing our jobs safely and going home to our families at the end of each and every shift,” said Kyle Colby, Cordero Rojo Mine General Manager.

In addition, Cloud Peak Energy’s Antelope Mine, located near Douglas, Wyoming, received the third place safety award for large surface mines from the Wyoming State Mine Inspector and the Wyoming Mining Association.

Cloud Peak Energy has a long-standing record of safe and responsible coal production. Last year, the company had one of the lowest All Injury Frequency Rates of the top-25 U.S. coal producers, according to the Mine Safety and Health Administration. Since its inception, Cordero Rojo Mine has shipped more than one billion tons. The low sulfur coal mined from Cordero Rojo is primarily shipped to electric utilities in the western, midwestern and southeastern United States.
