BGC Contracting has snared a $700 million mining and equipment maintenance services contract lost by Downer EDI at a NSW coal mine.

The five-year deal at Idemitsu Australia Resources’  Boggabri open-cut mine in north-western NSW starts in December when Downer’s contract expires.

BGC Contracting Chief Executive Greg Heylen said it was the WA company’s biggest NSW win in recent years.

“In addition to the size of the contract, it is a significant strategic success as we seek to expand nationally into new locations and commodities, particularly in coal,” Mr. Heylen said.

Idemitsu Chief Operating Officer Steve Kovac said the strategy for the mine’s operation had been reviewed over the past year.

He said BGC’s track record in building long-term partnerships with its bulk-commodity clients was the best fit for the project.

“BGC Contracting has demonstrated a very clear understanding of our strategy for an integrated, lean management team with shared business goals,” Mr. Kovac said.

“Having the support of a partner with the capacity and willingness to work collaboratively will deliver improved operational performance, which is paramount to the continued success of the mine.”

Both BGC and Idemitsu sought to allay job fears of the mine’s 450-strong workforce by saying the contractor would recruit locally.
