A Greene County coal mine will shutter by the end of this year, cutting 370 jobs, the company operating the mine told state labor officials in a letter posted Wednesday.

Morgantown, W.Va.-based Mepco LLC, in a letter to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry, said it decided to close its 4 West Mine due to what the company described as challenging geological conditions near the West Virginia border and rising production costs.

The company said it will idle operations on March 2, when about 191 workers will be laid off.

An additional 175 employees will be laid off on June 1, when they finish recovering equipment from the mine. Another four workers will be laid off on Dec. 31 when the mine closes for good. The workers are not represented by a union.

“The mine is being permanently closed because the aging of the mine and adverse geological conditions have impaired the productivity of the mine and forced higher production costs,” explained Mark Munger, the human resources director, in the notification sent to the state.

“Under these conditions, the mine is uncompetitive and not sustainable in today’s coal and electricity markets,” he added.

Mepco could not immediately be reached for comment.
