More than 10 people set off Friday, June 16 for a three hour tour to Marquette County’s Eagle Mine. This tour is just the first of eight until October.
The public can take this bus to Eagle Mine where they can tour the site and walk through the water treatment plant.

“We’ve been doing the tours now for about five years and it’s just an opportunity for the community to come out and check out what’s going on up at Eagle Mine,” said Meagen Morrison, the social responsibility adviser for Eagle Mine.

The tour begins at the Eagle Mine information center where bus transportation is provided to the mine itself. Along the way people can hear the history and facts on the mine, followed by a driving tour of the site.

“It’s a tour of the surface facilities, water treatment plant and ore storage building, its a driving tour of site, unfortunately we do not take groups underground,” said Morrison.

This tour of the nation’s only primary nickel mine is 100 percent free to the public.

“We just want to make it accessible for anyone who wants to come out,” said Morrison. “We are really proud of what we have built here, the guys and ladies are always excited to show off the site to the community.”

Morrison said the tour are enjoyed by both tourists and locals who’ve learned about mines their whole life.

“This is a new mine site and we’ve learned about old mine sites,” said Doug Lindblom, the community’s intern. “This is a very modern mine and very new and clean. It’s refreshing to see compared to what I was used to learning originally, so it’s been a good experience learning about mining.”

It’s these current features that Morrison said people comment the most on.

“After the tours people always have positive feedback,” said Morrison. “The number one thing I hear is they can’t believe how small everything is, what a small footprint we actually have and how clean the site is.”

Friday’s tour was of the mine, but the Humboldt Mill is also available to tour starting June 23rd.
