A contract employee of Pogo Mine who received minor injuries in a black bear attack Monday morning near the mine was released from Fairbanks Memorial Hospital later that day, according to a news release from the mine.

A second contract employee was killed in the bear attack, and the state medical examiner’s office has requested the body for autopsy, Alaska State Troopers said. AST spokeswoman Megan Peters said in an email the names of the victims won’t be released until the medical examiner positively identifies the body.

The bear attacked the two contractors at an exploration site 5 miles from the mining camp, where they were taking geologic samples. Pogo Mine’s emergency response was launched at about 10:40 a.m. after receiving a mayday signal. The response team found one of the contractors dead upon arrival. The bear had been shot and killed before Alaska Wildlife Troopers arrived.

According to the release, two Alaska Wildlife Troopers and one specialist from Alaska Department of Fish and Game flew from Fairbanks to investigate the scene. They identified the bear as a cinnamon black bear, which is a subspecies of black bear known for its reddish brown coat.
