Plans by Cemex Construction Materials Florida to expand mining operations onto land west of Brooksville have resurfaced.

A public inquiry workshop regarding the proposal is slated for 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13, at the Hernando County Mining Association Enrichment Center, 800 John Gary Grubbs Blvd., Brooksville.

The land proposed for mining, on the north side of State Road 50 across from Bayfront Health Brooksville, currently is zoned residential and commercial.

The meeting is the first step toward changing the County’s comprehensive land-use plan and rezoning the site.

In 2015, the mining proposal was withdrawn by Cemex when it became clear that two of five commissioners were opposed.

At the time, a super-majority vote, or four out of five commissioners, was necessary to change the county’s comprehensive plan.

In May of this year, citing property rights, the commission did away with the super-majority requirement, meaning just three affirmative votes can change the plan.

The mining expansion, slated for land that is owned by some of the county’s most influential business leaders, has been strongly opposed by Neighbors Against Mining.

They have argued that there is no need to expand mining in Hernando since there are hundreds of approved locations that have not yet been tapped.

They also cite health concerns and threatens to residents nearby, the canopy trees on Fort Dade Avenue and the nearby African-American Spring Hill Cemetery.
