Foresight Energy, a leading coal producer in the Illinois Basin, is looking to permanently seal part of its inactive Deer Run mine plagued by smoldering underground fire and carbon monoxide since 2014.

The St. Louis-based company seeks to close the longwall mining portion, or district, of the Hillsboro, Ill., mine complex immediately after securing approval from the Mine Safety and Health Administration, according to a filing made with the Securities and Exchange Commission in late December.

Longwall mining is typically one of the most productive and cost-effective forms of coal mining once operations begin. Foresight says that was especially true at Deer Run. “Because its average coal seam is over 7 feet thick, Deer Run has been one of our most productive mines since we began operating the longwall in August of 2012,” the company says on its website.

The permanent closure of the current longwall portion of the mine would mean not only lost productivity but also lost equipment that cannot be recovered, leading the company to brace for an aggregate impairment charge ranging from $42 million to $67 million in the fourth quarter of 2017.

Foresight’s SEC filing indicated that company officials were “uncertain as to when production will resume” in other areas of the mine complex.

A company spokesperson declined to comment beyond the regulatory filing.
