IT is something that should not be ignored nor forgotten in the promotion of responsible mining in this mineral-rich Southeast Asian nation of election-crazy people.

Various quarters said it is the close partnership between the government and mining companies in developing technology-driven solutions for responsible mining.

Thus, we commend the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Chamber of Mines of the Philippines (COMP) for working in unison to help the mining industry.

Recently, the DOST, through the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research Development, and COMP signed an accord on tech-driven responsible mining.

Council officers Carlos Primo David and Raul Sabularse signed the memorandum of agreement (MOA) with COMP executives Benjamin Philip G. Romualdez and Nelia C. Halcon.

Hopefully, this will be another long-term successful partnership between COMP, a private organization of 80 mining and quarrying firms, and the government, said Romualdez.

And the highly-articulate and workaholic Romualdez was also quick to express his willingness to share mining technologies with concerned government offices and agencies.

David, on the other hand, said the government, through the DOST, aims to help the mining industry through research and development.

In fact, there are many issues that science and technology play an important role, according to David.

They include the rehabilitation of legacy mines (abandoned old mines), which pose danger to the environment and the people’s safety.

In formalizing their working relationship, the government and the COMP are on track in utilizing science and technology in helping the country’s dollar-earning mining industry.
